Sharing Genes and Jeans: A Dad Closet Look Book
I know we’ve all stolen from Mom’s closet once in a while, but what about Dad’s? With the rising trend of dad jeans, chunky dad sneakers, and oversized menswear blazers, the father’s out there must be doing something right?? Well I took it upon myself to create a look book for you all on how to expand your closet from your Mom’s, sibling’s, and boyfriend’s closets, to the least expected of them all… DAD’S!
Below you will find six looks styled using pieces from my Dad’s closet. Feel free to take inspo and create your own looks by shopping in your own dad’s closet, and shop some of my own pieces linked below!
Look One: Dad Blazer and Khakis
Outfit details: Givenchy Blazer, Zara Knit Bralette, Tommy Bahama Khaki Pants, Warby Parker Hawkins Glasses, Zara Link Earrings (similar), Zara Multi-Chain Layered Necklace, Zara Animal Print Leather Loafers
This look was one of my favorites. I created this look using my dad’s blazer and khaki pants. With the combination of the two, the outfit is a bit overwhelmingly oversized, so in order to create more flattering shape I opted for a simple knit bralette. Wearing lingerie or more “feminine” articles of clothing with oversized menswear creates a great contrast (and also a weirdly powerful feeling), you can check out my “Laws of Fashion” post for more examples of this! For shoes I went with a loafer that are still total “dad vibes.” To finish off the look, I added some dainty gold accessories including a layered necklace, earrings, and my wire rim glasses making the whole look a little more upscale casual.
Look Two: Dad Blazer
Outfit details: Ralph Lauren Blazer, Zara Stretch Bodysuit, Costco Bandolino Jeans, Amazon Hudanhuwei Wide Brim Fedora Hat, Amazon Rectangle Vintage Tortoise Shell Sunglasses, Zara Link Earrings, Amazon Warmen Touchscreen Leather Gloves, Zara Chain Strap Animal Embossed Shoulder Bag, Zara Animal Print Leather Loafers
This was a really fun one to put together because I wanted the accessories to really bring the look to life! This look used only my Dad’s blazer, but I styled it as more of a winter coat, as it was made with a heavy wool, and had a plaid pattern. I paired the blazer with a simple brown bodysuit and beige skinny jeans (coincidentally stolen from mom’s closet, lol). However it’s the accessories that do the talking with this look. To take these basics up a notch, I added some brown leather gloves (because practical), tortoise shell sunnies, and a matching brown fedora wide brim hat, which as you can probably tell speaks volumes! I repeated my brown loafers, but paired a matching bag that really ties the whole look nicely together! With the hat and gloves and glasses, I really wanted to keep the jewelry simple as to not cross the line of over accessorizing. So I went with an old pair of Zara chain link earrings that matched both the chain strap bags I used in this lookbook, perfectly!
Look Three: Dad Blazer Part II
Outfit details: Ralph Lauren Blazer, Zara Halterneck Bodysuit, Levi’s Dad Jeans, Amazon Feisdy Vintage Square Cat Eye Sunglasses, Amazon Chain Pouch Bag, Zara Link Earrings (similar), Zara Sock Booties (similar)
This look was inspired by one of my favorite night out outfits, but instead I swapped out my own blazer for my dad’s which I love! I just love oversized, menswear anything, and this outfit was definitely improved by replacing it with a blazer three times my size lol! The jeans are my favorite go-to Levi’s. They are so comfy and loose around the legs, while fitting the waist and butt just right! They’re actually called “Dad Jeans,” however if you’re dad just happens to be your same height, or at least only a few inches taller, maybe you can try borrowing his instead and save a few bucks lol… These look great rolled up or tucked into sock booties. I originally intended to style with a bustier/corset, teddy, or some sort of lacy/mesh lingerie, but the pieces I have with me didn’t work as well, but I still highly recommend as an alternative! Lastly, the accessories were simple. Black cat eye sunglasses, gold link earrings, and slouchy clutch. The bag is also a great piece as the gold chain is removable and can be used as a clutch, or it even comes with an extra black strap if you prefer. But tbh, this gold chain is just everythingggg.
Look Four: Dad Sweater
Outfit details: Zara Textured Sweater, Costco Bandolino Jeans, Zara Wool Beret, Stan Smith Adidas Sneakers
So my dad doesn’t have any sweaters. Could be that they’re just not his style, or the fact that he lives in the desert, but I couldn’t do a look book without an oversized chunky sweater! So I just went shopping for a mens sweater and finished this simple, cozy look with a wool beret, beige pants, and my favorite (dusty looking) sneakers. It’s so simple, but the hat really takes the look up a notch. This is a great outfit for just a quick errand run, or around the house if you go with a nice stretchy jegging!
Look Five: Dad Suit
Outfit details: Ralph Lauren Blazer, Tommy Hilfiger Sweatshirt, Amazon Flare Leggings, Stan Smith Adidas Sneakers, Amazon Feisdy Vintage Square Cat Eye Sunglasses
This look was meant to be the whole suit, however my dad is 6’7” and the pants were just not working, lol. Here is a reference to where I intended to go with this outfit. However wearing with your own comfy leggings adds a bit more comfort and casualness to the look if you prefer! Layer any sweatshirt underneath, but one with a cool graphic print adds a pop of interest to your look. This is a great Fall Sunday errands ‘fit to pretend you have your life together, when in reality you’re probably hungover from Saturday night’s events ;)
I hope you enjoyed this look book! There will be many more to come, as styling has always been a huge passion of mine. Please don’t forget to tag me in outfits of your own if you decide to shop your own dad’s closet!
